After being captivated by Carmen, José abandons his sweetheart, his military duties, and his honor to be with her. His obsession ultimately leads to his downfall as Carmen's love fades, and she ultimately rejects him in favor of the bullfighter Escamillo. The opera ends tragically when a jealous José kills Carmen outside the bullring.
